Religion Newswriters Association honors top religion reporting

 

BETHESDA, Md. --- Religion reporters from across the country won top honors Saturday (Oct. 6) at the Religion Newswriters Association's 2012 awards competition.

Tom Breen of the Associated Press won first place in the Religion Reporter of the Year contest for large newspapers and wire services. Religion News Service's David Gibson won second place, and Julia Duin, for work done at The Washington Post Magazine, won third.

First place in the Religion Reporter of the Year contest for metropolitan newspapers went to Judy Thomas of The Kansas City Star. Second place went to Abraham Levy of the San Antonio Express-News, and third place went to Tim Townsend of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Annysa Johnson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel received an honorable mention.

Peggy Fletcher Stack of the The Salt Lake Tribune received the Cornell Religion Reporter of the Year award for midsized newspapers. Bob Smietana of The Tennessean won second place, and Bill Sherman of the Tulsa World took third place.

In the Cassels Religion Reporter of the Year contest for small newspapers, first place went to Jennifer PreyssofThe Victoria Advocate, with Catherine Godbey of The Decatur Daily in second place and Matthew Waller of the San Angelo Standard-Times coming in third.

David Gibson of Religion News Service won first place in the Supple Religion Feature Writer of the Year award. Julia Duintook second place for work done at The Washington Post Magazine, and Tim Townsend of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch won third place.

The Gerald A. Renner Enterprise Religion Report of the Year award went to Dan Gilgoff of CNN.com, with Caryle Murphyof GlobalPost coming in second place and Candace R. Kwiatek of The Dayton Jewish Observer in third.

First place in the Religion Commentary of the Year contest went to David Gibson of Religion News Service. Second place went to Jamie L. Manson of National Catholic Reporter, and third place went to Charles Honey of The Grand Rapids Press. Asra Nomani of The Daily Beast and syndicated columnist Michael McManus received honorable mentions.

The Schachern Award for Online Religion Section of the Year went to CNN.com's Belief Blog, with second place going to The Washington Post's On Faith and third place to the Houston Chronicle.

Ruth Moon of Christianity Today placed first for Magazine News Religion Report of the Year. Julia Duin won second place for work done at The Washington Post Magazine; Nadine Epstein of Moment magazine took third.

Christianity Today staff won first place in the Magazine Religion Story Layout and Design of the Year contest, with Elizabeth Dabney Hochman of KidSpirit Onlinecoming in second and Nadine Epstein of Moment magazine coming in third.

Moment's Nadine Epstein won first place in the Magazine Religion Graphic or Illustration of the Year contest. Second place went to the staff of Christianity Todayand third place went to Lauren Pond for work done at The Washington Post Magazine.

The Magazine of the Year award went to Moment magazine, with Christianity Today finishing second and the Harvard Divinity Bulletin taking third.

First place in the Radio or Podcast Religion Report of the Year contest went to Lily Percy of National Public Radio. Second place went to Brian Ellison, Stephen Steigman and Danie Alexander of KCUR-FM's "Up to Date." Third place went to NPR's Asma Khalid. Aelfie Tuff of Columbia University received an honorable mention.

CNN swept the Television News Magazine Religion Report of the Year awards. Eric Marrapodi took first place, and Marrapodi and Ali Velshi took second place.

The CNN team of Eric Marrapodi, Chris Lawrence, John Person and Jonathan Schaer won first place in the National Network/Cable News Religion Report of the Year contest, followed by Jerome Socolovsky and Mike Burke of Voice of America in second place and Mike O'Sullivan of Voice of America in third.

First place in the Television Local News Religion Report of the Year contest went to Ben Winslow, Doug Eldridge and Neil Olsen of KSTU Fox 13. Winslow and Eldridge also took second place, and Michelle Bearden of WFLA-TV won third place.

Jody Hassett of Pointy Shoe Productions won first place in the Religion Documentary of the Year contest. Debra Gonsher Vinik of Diva Communications, Inc. won second and third place.

The first place award in the Nonfiction Religion Book of the Year contest went to Tom Roberts of Orbis Books for his book, "The Emerging Catholic Church."

Lastly, Catherine Newhouse of the University of Missouri won the Chandler Award for Student Religion Reporter of the Year, followed in second place by Weston Gentry of the University of Colorado at Boulder and in third place by Jack Jenkins of Harvard Divinity School. Grace Lyden of the University of Missouri received an honorable mention.
