Commonweal Magazine seeks senior or executive editor
Commonweal Magazine, the distinguished independent journal of opinion edited and managed by lay Catholics, is seeking a senior or executive editor to play a significant role in helping to shape the magazine.
Reporting to Commonweal’s editor, Paul Baumann, the senior/executive editor will take a leadership role in helping to plan future issues, commissioning articles, working with key contributors, and ensuring the continued high quality of the magazine’s writing and appearance. Exceptional hands-on editing and rewrite skills are necessary. Commonweal serves a sophisticated but not merely academic readership, and the senior/executive editor must demonstrate an ability to take promising but undeveloped material and shape it into first-rate essays, reviews, and articles.
The position requires 10 years’ experience in an editorial role in the publishing industry, preferably in a deadline-driven environment. Demonstrated familiarity with the religious, political, and cultural questions and debates that make up Commonweal’s editorial focus is also required. Editorial contacts and relationships in the religious, political, literary, and academic worlds from which Commonweal draws its contributors are also valuable. A background in opinion journalism and editorial writing would be an additional plus.
The position is full time, although the Commonweal office operates on a four-day work week. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Commonweal is operated by a not-for-profit foundation independent of any church affiliation, with a board of directors which takes responsibility for the magazine’s fiscal health and editorial independence.
Resume and cover letter should be sent via e-mail (only) to Thomas Baker at tbaker@commonwealmagazine.org. Additional information about the magazine is available at http://www.commonwealmagazine.org.
Commonweal Magazine is an equal opportunity employer.
