COLUMBIA, MO.—Religion Newswriters' Schachern Award got a facelift at a recent RNA board meeting. Board members unanimously voted to retool the award—formerly honoring excellence in religion sections/page—to instead honor multi-media coverage of religion. This marks the association's first contest of this kind. "As journalism changes, our contests need to change as well," said Executive Director Debra L. Mason. "Stories about faith and values make great multimedia content and now we'll be able to reward that."
Under the RNA Contest Committee's new rules for the Schachern Award, any online affiliate of traditional journalism sites (newspaper, radio, television) and independent Web sites that engage in news coverage of religion are eligible to enter original reporting and commentary. Entrants will submit either working URLs (accessible to the general public) or CDs, DVDs or interactive PDFs that include the site's content, along with a list of the page elements to be included in judging, such as stories, graphics, slideshows, video and links. Entries will be judged primarily on the quality of reporting and writing about religion. Also taken into account will be the use of multi-media techniques and digital resources, quality of design, navigation and other elements. The entry deadline for the 2010 RNA Contests will be Feb. 1. More details will be posted online this fall. A list of the 2009 RNA Contest finalists is posted online here. Winners will be announced Sept. 12, 2009, at an awards banquet during the 60th RNA Conference in Minneapolis.
