Three Locations for Ash Wednesday Morning Commuters

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Clergy members from Historic Christ Church, Immanuel Church on the Hill and Church of the Resurrection will offer the imposition of ashes for morning commuters at three Alexandria locations on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016.Historic Christ Church clergy will be offering Ashes to Go to morning commuters from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the King Street Metro in Old Town Alexandria. Clergy members will be available for a simple prayer of confession, followed by the imposition of ashes with the traditional words, and ending with a bidding of peace.Immanuel Church on the Hill clergy will offer Ashes to Go in that church driveway at Quaker and Seminary Road from 7:00 – 9:30 a.m.

Church of the Resurrection clergy members will offer Ashes to Go at Southern Towers near the corner of Seminary Road and Beauregard, from 6:30 – 8:30 a.m.

An Episcopal clergy group in St. Louis began the practice of offering Ashes to Go several years ago. Many Episcopal churches across the country, particularly those along commuter rail and metro lines, have joined the movement. As the organizers of Ashes to Go say, “It is about bringing spirit, belief, and belonging out from behind church doors and into the places where we go every day. It’s a simple event with deep meaning, drawing on centuries of tradition and worship to provide a contemporary moment of grace.” Ashes to Go is a reminder that God is present in all places, even at the Metro on a busy morning.
