2009 RNA Contests net 201 entries

COLUMBIA, MO.—Professional and student reporters submitted nearly 900 stories and news sections about faith in 201 entries in the 2009 RNA Awards for Religion Reporting Excellence.

Entries declined 17 percent this year from 2008’s 242 entries, but the drop is better than comparable journalism groups, which have averaged a 25-percent decrease this year.

Two RNA awards received higher entries over the previous year. The Chandler Award increased by seven entries to 22, and the Radio Award increased by five to 14 total entries.

The remaining categories—Cassels, Cornell, Reporter of the Year, Schachern, Supple and Television—either were static or faced decreases up to 15 entries.

This week's announcement of the Chandler student finalists wraps up the judging phase of the contest. A complete list of finalists is available on our site.

Winners will be announced Sept. 12 at an awards banquet during the 2009 RNA Annual Conference in Minneapolis. Contest Chair Ann Rodgers will be calling winners in the next week to notify them of their awards.

The entry deadlines for the 2010 RNA Contest—including a revamped Schachern contest for multi-media packages—are Feb. 1 for all awards except the Chandler student contest, which has a May 1 deadline.
