2009 Chandler student contest finalists announced
COLUMBIA, MO.—Congratulations to the finalists for the 2009 Chandler Award for Student Writer of the Year in Religion. The contest—which was created to encourage the next generation of religion reporters—honors excellence in writing at the collegiate level with an emphasis on reporting skill and a grasp of religious issues that is fair and balanced. A total of 22 entries were received.
Two entrants, Sarah Pulliam of Wheaton College, and Tiffany Stanley of Harvard, each had two entries selected as among the finalists. In addition, two ties led judges to name 12 finalists.
The finalists, in alphabetical order:
- Adeniyi Amadou, Syracuse University
- Gabrielle Dunn, Emerson College (Cooper City, Fla.)
- Casey Feldman, Fordham University (NY, NY)
- David Grant, Virginia Tech
- Zahra Hankir, Columbia University
- Justin Hawthorne, Marshall University (Huntington, W.V.)
- Sarah Pulliam, Wheaton College, for work done at The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch
- Priscilla Reyna-Ovalle, San Antonio College
- Tiffany Stanley, Harvard University
- Olivia Wiznitzer, Yeshiva University (NY, NY)
Three winners will be announced Sept. 12, 2009, at the 60th RNA Annual Conference and Awards Banquet in Minneapolis. The top prize is $600 and a travel stipend to accept the award.
Now in its seventh year, the Chandler Award is supported through the generosity of Russ and ML Chandler. Russ was an award-winning religion reporter for the Los Angeles Times, a former president of RNA and an RNA Lifetime Achievement winner.
