A letter from Jaweed Kaleem, RNA Treasurer & Board Member

When I became a religion reporter at The Miami Herald six years ago, I had no idea what I was getting into. So like any journalist trying to figure out a story—or a new beat in this case—I called around to find the experts.

My editor sent me a few names. One was Yonat Shimron, then the religion reporter at the Raleigh News and Observer and now Managing Editor of Religion News Service. Another was the late Deborah Howell, ombudsman of The Washington Post and a longtime supporter of religion writing. The third was Adon Taft, a semi-retired former Herald religion reporter who had essentially invented the beat at the paper in a decades-long career.

Each had different advice, but everyone urged me to do one thing: get involved in the Religion Newswriters Association.

Wow, did it pay off.

RNA has been vital to my work as a religion reporter and it's through this amazing organization that I've not only become a better, more informed journalist, but made friendships that will last for years.

I'm not the only one.

For nearly 70 years, RNA has forged excellence by training journalists to cover faith—as well as secularism—with "civility, accuracy, fairness, and insight." From trainings and our annual conference to free style guides and ReligionLink, where you'll find story ideas and expert sources, the goal is to foster a civil, informed conversation about religion's role in the world. We understand religion's impact on everything from personal relationships to politics, health, science, education and the arts. We want media and readers to get it, too.

Yet, as a nonprofit, RNA can't do it all alone. We need your support.

During these holidays—many of them religious—please consider donating to the Religion Newswriters Foundation, our charitable arm. No gift is too small and all will be used to sustain and grow RNA's ongoing work.

The process is easy. Click the button below where it says "Donate Now."

On behalf of RNA, thank you for your support.

Here's to another 70 years—and more.
