Ted Merwin, Ph.D., will be discussing his new book, ” Pastrami On Rye, An Overstuffed History of the Jewish Deli,” on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at 10:30 a.m., at Temple Israel of Lawrence, 140 Central Avenue, Lawrence, N.Y.

For much of the 20th Century, the New York Jewish deli was an iconic institution in both Jewish and American life. As a social space it rivaled, and in some ways surpassed, the synagogue as the primary gathering space for the Jewish community. In popular culture it has been the setting for classics like ‘When Harry Met Sally.’ Today, after a long period languishing in the trenches of the hopelessly old-fashioned, it is experiencing a nostalgic resurgence.

“Pastrami On Rye” is the first full-length history of the N.Y. Jewish deli.  “Pastrami On Rye” gives us the surprising story of a quintessential N.Y. institution.

Dr. Ted Merwin is Associate Professor of Religion & Judaic Studies at Dickinson College (Pa.), where he is Founding Director of the Milton B. Asbell Center for Jewish Life.

The lecture will be followed by a kosher deli lunch catered by Lido Kosher Deli. Cost, with lunch included: Temple Israel of Lawrence member- $18.00; non-member – $20.00. For more information, or to register, please contact Alan at (516) 239-1140, or via email at
