Pacific School of Religion hosts a conference on drone warfare

The Bay Area Interfaith Conference on Drone Warfare will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 28 at Pacific School of Religion, 1798 Scenic Avenue, Berkeley, California.

The conference will address these questions:

  • Why is the faith community concerned about drone warfare?
  • Are civilians protected in drone warfare?
  • What is the effect of drone warfare on drone operators?
  • What does it mean to say: “Kill one terrorist and create 10 more terrorists?”

The presenters include:

  • Marjorie Cohn, professor emerita at Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Cohn, the former president of the National Lawyers Guild and criminal defense attorney, is also editor and contributor to Drones and Targeted Killing: Legal, Moral, and Geopolitical Issues.
  • Lisa Hajjar, professor of sociology at the University of California Santa Barbara, is a contributor to Life in the Age of Drone Warfare.
  • Lisa Ling, a former technical sergeant in‎ the U.S. Air Force, is featured in the heralded documentary National Bird,
  • Rep. Barbara Lee, the congressperson from California’s 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, which includes Berkeley and Oakland, has been invited. She has been in Congress for 20 years.

Two films produced by the Interfaith Network on Drone Warfare for congregations will also be screened: Moral and Safe?: War, Peace, Drone Warfare and the Religious Community and a 30 minute version of National Bird.
