MULTIPLE MEDIA AWARDS


CONTEST RULES & FEES


ELIGIBILITY

Religion News Association's multiple media awards are designed to recognize journalism excellence in using multimedia tools. Both niche (all religion) and general print, online or broadcast news media are eligible for the Commentary or Blog, Renner Enterprise and Supple Feature Writer categories, provided they are not owned, funded or operated by a denomination or faith group. Examples of eligible outlets include local newspapers/ television stations/ radio stations, BBC, NPR, CBS, Time Magazine, Christianity Today, Newsweek, Slate, Christian Century, America, Commonweal, Tricycle, Tikkun, Islamica, Salon, Vanity Fair and The Atlantic Monthly.

RNA membership is not required for entry. RNA's president and contest chairperson are not eligible to enter individual contests.


PRIZES

1st: $250 // 2nd: $150 // 3rd: $100

For those who cannot attend RNA's awards banquet, checks will be mailed to the entry address. A certificate will be shipped upon request (no plaques mailed).

HOW TO ENTER

  1. Review the instructions for your category below.
  2. Prepare your file(s).
  3. Complete an online entry form and submit your entry fee no later than March 2, 2020.

RELIGION STORY OF THE YEAR



CONTEST RULES

  • This award honors a single reporter, a news team, or an outlet.
  • Submit a single religion news story created and distributed via any media format in 2019 (accessible URLs preferred). Series are not eligible (see Renner enterprise award).
  • The story may include the main text, related sidebars and all related content. All materials must be published on the same date and time.
  • Shared bylines are permitted. Winning entries will share the award among all those credited in the byline.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES

  • Early bird deadline: January 21, 2020  //  Fees: $45 members / $90 non-members
  • Final deadline: March 2, 2020  //  Fees: $75 members / $120 non-members

 


EXCELLENCE IN RELIGION FEATURE WRITING  //  SUPPLE AWARD

CONTEST RULES
  • This award honors a single reporter.
  • Submit up to three religion features distributed via any media format in 2019 (accessible URLs preferred).
  • Stories may include the main text, related sidebars and all related content. All materials must be published on the same date and time as one of the feature stories.
  • One story per entry may have a shared byline, but the majority of the work should have been completed by the entrant.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

  • Early bird deadline: January 21, 2020  //  Fees: $45 members / $90 non-members
  • Final deadline: March 2, 2020  //  Fees: $75 members / $120 non-members



EXCELLENCE IN ENTERPRISE REPORTING  //  RENNER AWARD

CONTEST RULES
  • This award can honor a single reporter or a staff collaboration.
  • Submit an enterprise package, story or series about religion distributed via any media format in 2019 (accessible URLs preferred).
  • Submit 1 to 10 stories per package/series. If the series is longer than 10 stories, entrants may submit a one-page letter explaining content of remaining series components.
  • Stories must be clearly identified as a series or be clearly related through content.
  • Entries should include the main text/audio and all related components.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

EXCELLENCE IN RELIGION COMMENTARY

CONTEST RULES
  • This award honors a single reporter.
  • Eligible entrants include opinion-driven columns, syndicated columns, blogs, podcasts, vodcasts or other types of opinion pieces that discuss religion.
  • Submit up to three pieces created and distributed via any media format in 2019.
  • Judging is not based on agreement or disagreement with the viewpoint expressed.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

Note: Applicants uncertain about whether to enter pieces in the Commentary or News Analysis contests should consider the following: The Analysis contest is designed mainly for third-person pieces, while the Commentary contest is mainly designed for first-person pieces. That said, the judges recognize that good commentary and good analysis can be in either first or third person. If your main goal was to present a personal view or a personal experience (even as it relates to news), your entry probably belongs in the Commentary contest. If your main goal was to dispassionately analyze a trend or news event, your entry probably belongs in the Analysis contest.

  • Eligible entrants include analytical pieces, syndicated columns, analysis, blogs, podcasts, vodcasts or other types of opinion content about religion.
  • Submit up to three pieces created and distributed via any media format in 2019.
  • Judging is not based on agreement or disagreement with the viewpoint expressed.

EXCELLENCE IN SHORT RELIGION VIDEO


CONTEST RULES

  • This award can honor a single reporter or a staff collaboration.
  • Submit video and its related content from up to three religion stories produced in 2019 for a website.
  • The video/s cannot have been produced for television, or as a web sidebar for a piece that appeared on television. Video entries must have been published, posted or broadcast in their original format. Clips or edited videos that were not originally produced with the intent to run as a short video will be ruled ineligible.
  • The video/s can have appeared either with or without an accompanying written article. Limit for each video is six minutes. Transcripts are not required.
  • Stories may have multiple credits. Winning entries will share the award among all those credited for the work.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

EXCELLENCE IN RELIGION PHOTOGRAPHY — SINGLE IMAGE

CONTEST RULES

  • This award honors a single photographer.
  • Submit ONE religion photo captured by a single photographer and published in 2019 via a news outlet, either in print or online.
  • Photo should be submitted via static URL or uploaded with the following specs: 72 dpi, 1200 pixels on the longest side, jpeg files. Name file in this manner: Lastname_Firstname.jpg
  • Photo may be cropped and may include routine image correction for color toning, exposure and white balance only. No other digital manipulation is allowed.
  • Photo must be documentary in style and not be staged.
  • Entries must include caption, photographer name and the date taken.
  • RNA reserves the right to limit the presentation of awards for insufficient entry numbers.

ENTRY FEES & DEADLINES

  • Early bird deadline: January 21, 2020  //  Fees: $25 members / $50 non-members
  • Final deadline: March 2, 2020  //  Fees: $32 members / $57 non-members




EXCELLENCE IN RELIGION PHOTOGRAPHY — GALLERIES


CONTEST RULES
  • This award honors a single photographer or a news outlet collaboration.
  • Submit at least three and no more than 10 religion photos that make up a series, gallery or photo essay captured by a photographer or news outlet and published in 2019 via a news outlet, either in print or online.
  • Photos should be submitted via static URL or uploaded with the following specs: 72 dpi, 1200 pixels on the longest side, jpeg files. Name files in this manner: Lastname_Firstname1.jpg, Lastname_Firstname2.jpg, etc.
